Pirate-Cake #2 - BUCK

February 5th, 2007

Pirate-Cake #2! It’s been confusing to people, that they are called Pirate-Cakes, people keep asking if they are edible…(which would be cool, but they’re not!) they are sculptures of a line of characters I drew named pirate cakes after the stick figures my sister ( aka *Mary-Cakes!) draws! ^_^
Anyhow, this one was made using wire under his arms, legs & antlers and it came out much better than the dowels used for this one. I also used wooden beads for his eyes as opposed to plastic eyes. I wanted a more irregular shape to them and these worked well! I can’t seem to get the clay as smooth as I’d like it… I would really love to find a better way to make the basic shape… some sort of mold that I could use to keep them exact and not limit the addition of things like antler’s and such… not sure what medium would work best for that, but I am going to look into it.

You can order them in sets of 10 cards for only 5 bucks, and if you order 4+ sets you get a cute little tin to carry them in for free! You even get to choose the character that will adorn the front! :D Would you like to see the tin for sale separately? Here’s your chance to let me know! Also, I will update the rest of the new stuff this Monday!

Here’s a little peak at some custom postcards I have been working on for Liz at Chatti Patti. I just got them back from the printer and they are so adorable! She’s super talented and was such a pleasure to work with, I feel blessed to have such amazing clients! Also in this pic is my little area around my computer, and my favorite drink! Mmmmmmm Cran-Rasberry Juice…so so good!

I’m busy busy, but have found a few minutes to play with www.dumpr.net/ Ever since I watched great expectations, I kind of had a secret dream to have my own show… of course, it would not consist of these types of things, but more of the art I do w/out my computer…oils and maybe some ink drawings, which I have not shared a whole lot of b/c I have not done a whole lot recently… I have just started trying to replicate some of that style I use when drawing with ink via Illustrator, but it is slow going, I need a tablet or something, b/c there are so many lines and it’s really time consuming…so while I do find spare moments when I can play with fun tools like the one above, I dont really have time yet to redraw some of my ink drawings into illustrator…so, for now, this is it! I have been finding a bunch of old drawings while organizing the office though, so maybe I’ll scan a couple for you to see what I’m talking about!

Pirate cakes coming off the paper!

HOpe you had a super happy weekend! I made this prototype of Mr. SheepCake! He didn’t turn out quite right proportionally speaking, his body is much bigger than it should be and his ears are not black (I forgot) so not too “sheepy” …You can however remove him from his ‘grassy’ base, which I love! I don’t love the dowels so much, but this is just a test run! Next time I am going to use wire & cover with the clay and I think it will look better…
I just want to make tons of these, I love that they are so BIG! He’s about 14 inches tall on his base! The thought of making a bunch of costumes for them makes me happy, but I’ve got to get rid of those dowels!!!
On another note, JIn and Earl are back on air with the 101 web design show (Here’s their site http://www.101webdesignshow.com/ but you can download on itunes)! They make me laugh, it’s nice to hear them again! ^_^
